Soru Izakaya | The New Nippon

10.04.2017
I admit I'm not the biggest fan of Japanese food but this place changed my mind. Soru Izakaya is a Japanese gastropub found in Maginhawa, and if you're looking for a place to eat or chill after a days work, this is it! The restaurant was inspired by the art style of Bishouju (pretty girl) manga, traditional Japanese art, the wild and colorful Tokyo night life, and the new wave of speakeasy cocktail bars. You can see the mixture of traditional and modern Japanese style with the interiors and is also brought to their food. At the end of the restaurant you can find a Robatayaki style of Izakaya where you can watch a Teppan Chef cook your food.

Walls and chairs are decorated with various Japanese art and text that makes the feel more authentic. During daytime the whole place is bright and lit, but comes night time the lights are dimmed a bit to create the feel of the gastropub.

Since it's a gastropub they have Sake Night every Friday for 149 pesos with 1 Carafe of Sake from 7pm to 2am and Sapporo Saturdays (ALL DAY) for as low as 99 pesos! They also have flavored beers if you like.

Let's take a look at their food!

KYURI GREEN ICED TEA (P85), SORU LEMONADE (P85), HOUSE BLEND ICED TEA (P85)
I ordered their House Blend Iced Tea which is made from passion fruit while their kyuri green iced tea is cucumber based. The house blend tea is very refreshing and a bit sweet and I didn't get to taste the kyuri green iced tea.

KUSHIYAKI PLATTER (P650)
The Kushiyaki Platter consists of Bacon Enoki (bacon stuffed with enoki mushroom), Asura (bacon stuffed with hard boiled egg), Gyuchizu (bacon stuffed wtith melted cheese), Shitake Mushroom, Butabara (pork belly) and Yakitori (chicken leg) two pieces each. Let me tell you everything is SO GOOD! I can't put into words how delicious everything is. You can taste the sauce and spices used and it perfectly blends with the meat. My personal favorite of course is the Gyuchizyu, Bacon Enoki and Shitake Mushroom. If you don't want to whole platter you can order each separately with a minimum of 3 sticks. Best paired with beer. or any liquor.

*RECOMMENDED

TORI KARAAGE (P190)
Composed of chicken karaage with torched cheddar and torched mozzarela. This is best paired with rice! I love this dish since it has cheese on it haha

*RECOMMENDED

NORI TEMPURA (3PCS 240, 5PCS 360, 8PCS 520)
Their batter is made of the usual tempura batter but mixed with nori, which tastes different from the regular tempura. I think I like the taste of this tho the batter is little bit thick and there's only a small portion of the tiger shrimp, but altogether it tastes good.

SHAKE BELLY ABURI (P220)
If there's only one thing you need to try at Soru Izakaya, it's there Shake Belly Aburi. It's a torched salmon belly so it melts in your mouth. You can taste the sweetness and little bit of heat with every bite. It's heavenly!

*RECOMMENDED

SALMON SASHIMI (P420)
Their salmon is not your usual salmon since what they mostly use is a Norweigan Salmon that is chilled and not frozen. Most of the Japanese restaurants in the Philippines have the frozen salmon since it's cheaper however it loses a lot of the quality of the salmon. Their salmon sashimi has more fat and is more mouthful and flavorful. They only serve the best quality.

*RECOMMENDED

AKAI PAELLA MAKI (P380)
They also have the regular paella rice, it's cheaper than the kuro paella. If I should choose between the two I like this one better. It has grilled chicken, asparagus and tamago. If you take a bite into this you'll taste a lot of flavors and I love it!

*RECOMMENDED

KURO PAELLA MAKI (P480)
A fusion of Spanish and Japanese cuisine. If you love paella negra this is a must try. The maki consists of squid ink paella rice and salmon, asparagus, kani and shrimp. The colorful art around the plate is made from japanese mayo so you can just dip the maki in it.

*RECOMMENDED

HIROSHIMA MAKI (P290)
If you like your maki with a hint of heat you should try this. It's basically a salmon maki topped with a gyoza wrapper and sashimi cubes marinated in spicy soru sauce. Every portion is well balanced and a mouthful.

EBI AND KANI POPCORN (P280)
A mixture of Ebi and Kani that is perfect for while drinking. If you want you can also pair it with rice! The batter used I think is a combination of the usual tempura batter and nori that's why it's a bit green.

MATCHA CHEESECAKE (P240)
All I can say is they're generous with the Matcha powder and the presentation is on point. Gosh this dessert is so good!

*RECOMMENDED

RISING SUN TAKOYAKI DESSERT (P180)
I've heard of takoyaki before but not as a dessert. Here they used white and red velvet batter to create the takoyaki look and added dried fruits and torched marshmallow. This is a must try!

Soru Izakaya is not only for students, working peeps but also for families. The food they serve is A High quality and I'm glad this place opened up to cater to those who love Japanese food and also to people like me who turned into loving this cuisine because of them.
